25 new concerts, the majority featuring young local artists, many of which will take place on the Kursaal Terraces.
As in previous years, this edition will also include a jazz programme on the emblematic Kursaal Terraces, the setting for 21 concerts, specifically at the Frigo Gunea and on the Zurriola Terrace, from July 21 to 26.
The idea with these concerts is to draw attention to the fine quality of local groups who have played on these same stages in recent years. The Jazz Festival’s commitment to the new home-grown jazz scene has lost none of its strength with the health crisis.
This said, its responsibility and care required to deal with the threat of Covid-19 has had an enormous influence on the format in which said concerts will be presented.
On the one hand, from the artistic point of view, the 55th Jazz Festival has asked the musicians and groups to make the effort to present their music in a format we could describe as “chamber”: stripped of percussion and in formations of no greater than three people on stage. These measures are intended to prevent the music from encouraging the audience to stand up and dance, something that would make it impossible to control social distancing.
From the organisational point of view, the Kursaal terraces will take the shape of a bar-restaurant format, with a fixed maximum capacity of people and guaranteeing the distance between tables. The audience will therefore sit around tables at which food and drink will be served to them.

8th TXIKIJAZZ 2020
Txikijazz, an important part of the San Sebastian Jazz Festival, returns this year in its eighth edition, also adapted to the circumstances. Music will be the big star of the show and there will be no parallel activities for children.
We will offer 4 concerts designed for family enjoyment, all in compliance with the protection and hygiene regulations stipulated by the authorities.
Two concerts on the Kutxa Kultur Terrace at Tabakalera, as part of the Musika Familian season, with a capacity of 74 attendees and a price of €3 per person:
- The Binilo’s: July 23, at 20:30.
- Los Juanes: July 24, at 20:30.
The other two concerts will take place on the Kursaal Terrace, for 300 people, where access will be restricted to families and children must be accompanied:
- The Binilo’s: July 25, at 12:00.
- Sara Mansilla y Los Juanes: July 26, at 12:00.
Kutxa Fundazioa, Fundación SGAE, Diputación de Guipúzcoa and Lakunza keep on supporting the Txikijazz.

Those already revealed are joined by big European names on the 55th Jazzaldia programme: Bugge Wesseltoft, Mariza, Lina_Raül Refree, Michel Portal, Salvador Sobral, Bojan Z.
Jorge Pardo, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Chano Domínguez, Marco Mezquida, Joachim Kühn, Oreka TX, Iñaki Salvador, Carles Benavent, Javier Colina, Perico Sambeat and all those already announced have also confirmed their shows.
The 55th San Sebastian Jazz Festival announces that it has closed and now confirms its programme of paying concerts. As forwarded, local musicians play an important part in the line-up; however, the perspective of borders opening in coming weeks means that the attractive names of European musicians have been incorporated.
In the first place, three Portuguese singers
Mariza, Salvador Sobral and Lina.
Mariza, the performer responsible for reinventing of Fado and one of the great figures of Portuguese music, will treat us to the premiere performance of her emotional and majestuous interpretation of the repertoire of the brilliant Amália Rodrigues. Her show in the Plaza de la Trinidad will be one of the most eagely awaited at the 55th Jazz Festival.
Lina and Raül Refree released an album which remained in the Top 10 of European radios for 4 months in a row, as well as in the leading music lists worldwide, magazines and specialised websites. They are also candidates with “Cuidei que Tinha morrido” for the Best Video Awards at New York’s
One Screen Short Film Festival and Best Album at Les Victoires du Jazz, presented in France to coincide with World Music Day. Their lyrical and sombre reinterpretation of the Fado classics has caused a sensation all over Europe.
Salvador Sobral, who previously won over an amazed public at his impressive performance in the Plaza de la Trinidad, will return with his current project: Alma Nuestra, a collection of
boleros sung in Spanish, combining two of his musical passions: jazz and Cuban music.
Iñaki Salvador, our pianist
par excellence, will give two concerts; one as a duo with
Chano Domínguez – Iñaki and Chano, two of the Spanish jazz piano heavyweights – and another in a quartet with the sax and flute player
Jorge Pardo.
The Festival will pay a tribute to two unique and decisive musicians in the history of music: joining the already announced reinterpretation of works by Beethoven brought to us by the pianist from the Balearics,
Marco Mezquida, is a session (in fact the one opening the event) recreating the repertoire of one of the concerts given by the fabulous quintet, taken through its steps on that occasion by Charlie Parker, on what will be the 100th anniversary of his birth, going by the name of
Jazz at Massey Hall: Charlie Parker Tribute.
A section of three solo piano concerts will take place in the Cloister of the San Telmo Museum, featuring the extraordinary Serbian pianist
Bojan Z. and local performers
Mikel Azpiroz and Paul San Martín. In addition to the aforementioned, of course, is the performance, also in solo piano format, by
Joachim Kühn at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre.
Alternating between jazz, Eastern and classical music are the performances of two European virtuosos, packed with musical intelligence and sensitivity: the German cellist
Anja Lechner and the French pianist
François Couturier, who present their new project:
Momento.
Michel Portal, born in Bayonne, and who received the Donostiako Jazzaldia award in 2018, is without a doubt the Basque jazz musician of greatest prestige. Two years ago we heard him in two collaborations with other French musicians. Now we can listen to him in the Trini with his new quintet.
Another Basque man, this time from Navarre, promises intensity and excellence:
Joseba Irazoki.
The Nordic trio
Rymden has presented itself in the last year as one of the most powerful, creative and complex European musical projects. The fabulous keyboard player
Bugge Wesseltoft is joined by two of the three members of the iconic trio E.S.T.
Dan Berglund and Magnus Óström complete
Rymden, the super group responsible for bringing the Festival to a close in the Plaza de la Trinidad.
The Festival is currently working on the programme of a series of concerts to substitute the cancelled free sessions and which will feature an important number of
local groups. We will shortly announce the name of these groups and the format of their performances.
Tickets:
Tickets for the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and the Kursaal Auditorium will go on sale on June 18.
For the Plaza de la Trinidad, only group packages will go on sale on June 18 (referring to packages of 4 or 6 places sitting together, with discounts of 30% and 40%), while single and individual season tickets will go on sale at a later date (July 2).
Tickets for the concerts at the San Telmo Museum will also go on sale on July 2.

[post_content] => The 55th San Sebastian Jazz Festival, to run from July 22-26, now has its poster. It is the work of Joseba Larratxe Berazadi, also known as Josevisky (Irun, 1 March 1985).
Larratxe started his professional career as a creator of cartoon strips for newspapers while studying Architecture in San Sebastian. Today, he illustrates for the magazine Argia, as well as for other publications and books. In 2019 he brought out the graphic novel Joana Maiz (Harriet Editions) with the screenwriter Yurre Ugarte, and he is soon to launch the album corresponding to the comic series Basolatik berri onik ez (Ikastolen Elkartea), written by Asisko Urmeneta.
This year’s poster was created during the lockdown, a situation prompting a dynamic and light-filled result, featuring the public as its protagonist, understanding the Jazz Festival as a celebration. According to the artist: “Generally speaking, I believe it reflects our ability to remain happy in the face of adversity, come hell or high water.”
For this year’s Jazz Festival poster, Joseba Larratxe made no attempt to conceal his cartoon roots in the outline or characterisation of the figures. In the illustrator’s own words: “I try to make my style identifiable, even if I have to adapt it to the characteristics of each project. Usually I start working on paper and end on the computer, but in this case I produced the complete process digitally.”

The Festival will run, as planned, from July 22-26
As we announced some weeks back, San Sebastian’s Jazzaldia is preparing an edition adapted to the new circumstances, on the same dates as planned (22-26 July 2020) and with a programme of Basque and Spanish jazz, although we’ll be keeping an eye out for the possibility to include European musicians if they can travel to our city in July.
The stages for this edition of the San Sebastian Jazz Festival will be the Plaza de la Trinidad, the Kursaal Auditorium, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and the San Telmo Museum, all with assigned seating.
While the final programme will be announced and the tickets will go on sale in late June or early July, work is already underway at the Jazzaldia to confirm a number of prestigious names from the Basque and Spanish Jazz scene.
Recovered from the previous programme is the presence of
Marco Mezquida, the new piano whizzkid, with three projects presented in earlier years in Donostia, and that of
Oreka TX.
Among the new features are
Iñaki Salvador, the musician to have performed most often at the Jazzaldia and the pride and joy of Basque Jazz;
Jorge Pardo, the sax and flute player recognised as one of Europe’s greatest Jazz musicians;
Channo Domínguez, our most international pianist; the alto sax
Perico Sambeat, who brings an instrumental tribute to Frank Zappa;
Javier Colina, a double bass player and all-round musician from Pamplona of undeniable musical finesse, and the guitarists
Josemi Carmona and
Chicuelo, exceptional flamenco players with a sensitive and intelligent approach to Jazz, all joined by other great musicians, such as the harmonica player
Antonio Serrano.
Perhaps one of the most remarkable new additions, even if she is a regular at our Festival, is
Sílvia Pérez Cruz, with the presentation of her album
MA, recorded in Tokyo in 2019. Also deserving special mention is the extraordinary pianist
Joachim Kühn, who recently released an album of solo piano dedicated to the most lyrical facet of the great Ornette Coleman, which he will present to us at the coming Jazzaldia in Donostia, being able to travel here from his home in Ibiza.
More news will be announced shortly. Please keep an eye on our networks and on our website (www.jazzaldia.eus) .[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

In the photo, Ellis Marsalis with her son Branford
Today is a day of great losses for the jazz world. Ellis Marsalis, one of the great patriarchs of our music, and Wallace Roney, a trumpet player outstanding for his tremendous lyricism and musicality, have died.
Our Festival presented Ellis Marsalis with its Donostiako Jazzaldia Award in 2016, in recognition of his essential contribution to jazz history as a whole. As well as being one of the leading modern jazz pianists, he had accumulated enormous prestige as a music instructor: he taught hugely important musicians including Jesse Davis, Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton and, naturally, his sons Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason, all front-line jazz figures. The legacy left by Ellis Marsalis is impressive.
Wallace Roney was considered to be one of Miles Davis’s most outstanding students; in fact, the Davis offspring have issued a statement of their sorrow over Roney’s passing, highlighting the ties that connected them. But Roney also had his own voice and earned recognition for his personal merits. His quality was obvious in his two visits to the Heineken Jazzaldia: in 2006 as a member of the septet accompanying another recently disappeared icon, McCoy Tyner, and in 2012 with the Miles Smiles project recreating the work of Miles Davis.
