The SGAE Foundation, in collaboration with the San Sebastian City Council, Donostia Kultura and the 58th San Sebastian Jazz Festival / 58th Jazzaldia held a news conference today to present the IX edition of JazzEñe, the national jazz showcase encompassing eight concerts in the shape of double bills on the mornings of 22-25 July. For the third consecutive year, JazzEñe features on the programme running at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre as part of the 58th San Sebastian Jazz Festival / 58th Jazzaldia.
The presentation saw the participation of Miguel Martín, Director of Jazzaldia, Garbitxu, President of the SGAE Euskadi Regional Board, and Javier Estrella, the Director of JazzEñe. The event featured a performance by the pianist and composer Lucía Rey, who gave a brief taste of things to come in her live show at JazzEñe 2023.
JazzEñe 2023 offers eight concerts starting at 12:30: Lucía Rey Trío and MOVE (22 July); Carles Margarit Quinteto and NGBM Cuarteto (23 July); Alto For Two and Niño Josele (24 July) and Bandolero Quarteto and Gonzalo del Val (25 July). Tickets are on sale at €8 for each date on the websites of San Sebastian’s Victoria Eugenia Theatre and the festival itself. The concerts can also be viewed in live streaming mode via the festival’s YouTube channel.
A SGAE Foundation programme, JazzEñe seeks to take Jazz made in Spain onto the international scene. The body therefore rounds off JazzEñe with three professional gatherings at which the eight selected groups will meet promoters and programmers from festivals and jazz clubs around the world. The aim is to create links enabling them to work together in the future and to take their projects beyond our borders by signing for tours and performances. Invited by the SGAE Foundation, the programmers will also attend the live concerts.
This ninth edition of JazzEñe has invited eleven guest programmers to Jazzaldia: April Jazz Festival (Finland); Beaux Jazz & Sound of Europe Festival, Bimhuis (Netherlands); Jazz Plus (Bulgaria); Jazz sous les Pommiers (France); Münsterland Festival and Uli Fild Concertbüro (Germany); Offbeat Jazzfestival Basel (Switzerland); Saint-Louis International Jazz Festival (Senegal) Sudtirol Jazz Festival (Italy) and WartaJazz Booking Agency (Indonesia).
The meetings will take place on 23, 24 and 25 July at 11:00 in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre’s Sala Club.
The aforementioned eight groups have been selected by a committee of professionals from the 262 projects submitted. Said committee, which met online on 21 March 2023, was made up this year of Javier Estrella, Director of JazzEñe; Miguel Martín, Director of Jazzaldia; Verónica Ferreiro, writer and singer, participant in JazzEñe 2016 and 2022; and Abe Rábade, writer and pianist, participant in JazzEñe 2017.
JazzEñe is a programme created by the SGAE Foundation to internationally launch the jazz made in Spain, to encourage the participation of jazz groups in festivals, to promote international tours for SGAE members and to foster meetings and the exchange of experiences and knowledge between professionals in the sector (authors, artists, managers, programmers, festival directors, record labels, etc.) from here and from the rest of the world.
Following its first edition, held in Madrid in 2014, the competition travelled first of all to Valencia and later to Zaragoza and Málaga. Now, in its ninth edition, this show bringing the reality of Spanish jazz to the public and festival directors from all over the world returns for the third year running to the context of the San Sebastian Jazz Festival which, with its 58 editions, represents one of the great bastions of jazz not only in Spain, but also in Europe and the rest of the world.
Over the years, numerous artists have taken their music to festivals throughout Europe thanks to the SGAE Foundation’s Eñe programmes. Artists Chicuelo & Mezquida, participants in Zaragoza edition, have since performed at the Tokyo Jazz Festival. And in 2018, the SGAE Foundation presented Eñe artists Antonio Lizana, Rycardo Moreno and Pedro el Granaíno in the framework of the Biennale’s Flamenco White Nights project in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
Special mention must also be made of their participation in the 2017 Amersfoort International Jazz Festival (Netherlands) by four ensembles participating in JazzEñe: Camerata Flamenco Project, Nono Garcia Trío, Alexey Leon Trío and Marco Mezquida Solo. In 2022 the Festival opened to Basque groups, programming Oreka TX, whose peculiar and distinctive sound comes from the txalaparta.

All of the above-mentioned names will be joined on 20 July by Euskorleans, a project combining Basque music and dance with the brass bands and Jazz of New Orleans. This joyful and festive celebration will announce the arrival of Jazzaldia, to start the following day on 21 July.
The Donostiako Jazzaldia Awards will go, in recognition of three long-standing careers dedicated to the world of Jazz, to: Abdulah Ibrahim, Enrico Rava and Yosuke Yamashita.
Abdullah Ibrahim is the living history of Jazz, the symbol and standard of an entire brilliant generation of South African musicians. In his career spanning more than 70 years, the South African genius has been universally acclaimed. Here at the Jazzaldia, we have been lucky enough to see and hear Ibraham at the 5 magical concerts which still remain, years later, in the memory of those who were able to enjoy them.
Enrico Rava is the best-known and most outstanding Italian Jazz musician worldwide. Having shot to international fame in the sixties, the Italian trumpeter and composer, with six decades of professional career to his name, has stayed up there as one of the most active and inquisitive musicians, always immersed in myriad original projects and considered to be one of the leading trumpet soloists. His sound is immediately familiar, and his music constantly flows through astoundingly original ideas.
Yosuke Yamashita is without a doubt one of the most important figures in the history of Japanese Jazz and one of those who, over the years, has made the greatest contribution to Japan’s position as one of the leading Jazz countries. Born in Tokyo in 1942, Yamashita is a celebrity in his country and enjoys global fame, with his explosive style, as one of the best Jazz pianists of all time.
With the title of Freedom First, the Catalan Jazz pianist Albert Marquès brings the live presentation of his album recorded with Keith LaMar, a prisoner condemned to death in the USA in 1993. The 4 musicians appearing on stage will be joined, from the distance, by the voice of Keith LaMar, through recordings of his voice and a telephone performance live from prison.
LaMar himself has sent us a couple of messages asking for support and recommending the two concerts to take place in the Sala Club on 24 and 25 July at 20:00 (€15 – Tickets on sale on our website and at the ticket offices).

Running parallel to Jazzaldia, this year the Filmoteca Vasca organises the 7th edition of its Jazzinema season focused on the extraordinary relationship existing between the cinema and Jazz.

The group from Mali, founded in 2013 on the initiative of the late Bamba Dembélé, has its roots in a profound and sincere African authenticity bringing its Bambara tradition swiftly into the 21st century, conveying its expression through an intense and electric play on guitars. The result is unique music, of mind-boggling intensity, with a wicked beat and intoxicating, hypnotic, torrid and sensual power, spreading irresistible joy with their spunky electric guitars, their endlessly repeated beats and their simple and catchy tunes.
Bamba Wassoulou Groove will take the place of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who have cancelled their European tour, on 25 July at 20:00 in the Trinitate Plaza, prior to Joss Stone’s concert.
“Arima” means “soul” in Basque, and that’s precisely what this group does: Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Funk, Jazz-Groove from the 60s and 70s, but with their sights focused on the most recent of these styles, Neo Soul. The group was created by the DJ and bass player Makala and by the singer of powerful voice, Lidia Insausti. The two were later joined by Paul San Martín on the keyboards and Gorka Gaztanbide on the drums.
Live, as well as performing their own numbers in the Basque language, they will render covers of some of the Soul greats, including Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Marie “Queenie” Lyons, Gil Scott-Heron…
Arima Soul will replace Pere Bujosa to give a free concert at the Nauticool on 21 July at 21:00.
Tickets already purchased for the double bill on 25 July in the Trinitate Plaza by Lady Black Mambazo followed by Joss Stone are automatically valid for the two new concerts, this time with Bamba Wassoulou Groove and Joss Stone, with no need for their purchasers to take further action.

Ten local groups boasting a very high level have been selected following a process first of involving the submission of 65 applicants, followed by 15 concerts in clubs throughout the city. The 10 groups selected, and who will play for the first time at the 58th Jazzaldia are: Isla Trío, Xahu, Motelas, Les Cuisinières, Lutfi Jakfar Sixth Trio, Arnaud Labastie Trio, Amaika Rude, Mikel Legasa’s Quintet, Xavi Maldonado and David Cid Quartet and Kinkfolk.
All of the above will be joined by a concert given by another artist from San Sebastián, but this time well-established: Elena Setién, in a performance at the Nauticool.
Katapulta Tour Gipuzkoa is a program promoted by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council’s Department of Culture, Cooperation, Youth and Sports, and by Kutxa Fundazioa, which is dedicated to promoting young talents in Gipuzkoa in the fields of music and the performing arts. From the groups participating in this year’s circuit, the San Sebastian Jazz Festival has selected 4 bands who will perform at the 58th edition: Bamms, Nakar, Olana Liss and Ramada Inn.

The San Martin Market will host two concerts “Shopping to the sound of Jazz”: Fran Serrano will perform on the double bass with Gonzalo Encinal on the piano on the morning of 21 July; while on 22 July, Aitor Marimon will take to the stage on the guitar with Rodrigo Lauroba on the saxophone.
Three concerts by local groups at Fnac Foruma on July 21, 22 and 23 at 19:00.
Garbera shopping centre will, for the second year running, host part of the 58th Jazzaldia programme with 10 concerts, 2 a day, one at 12:30 and the other at 20:00.

Each day will kick off at 12:30 with Txikijazz and a concert for all members of the family. The other concert of the day will run in the evening, at 20:00, featuring 5 groups who will also give performances suitable for all ages.
Among the most interesting performances are those of Jerry Bergonzi Quartet, Blue Lab Beats and the Eri Yamamoto Trio. Jerry Bergonzi is one of the best sax players in recent decades, a genius who has skilfully created his own language. Blue Lab Beats, with their cool, elegant, urban and modern music, is one of the bands that best reflects the creativity, fresh approach and innovative spirit of London’s buzzing Jazz scene. Eri Yamamoto, a Japanese pianist and composer, brings profound, lyrical, evocative and enormously sensitive music.
Garbera, which is currently completing its transformation, aims to continue promoting and actively participating in the events organised in the city. JazzEñe will run for the third consecutive year at the 58th San Sebastian Jazz Festival with eight concerts showcasing the national jazz scene, from 22-25 July, in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre.

The festival for family audiences will run from 23-25 July on three stages: Kutxa Fundazioa’s Kutxa Kultur Plaza (Tabakalera, 4th floor), Chillida Leku and the Garbera shopping centre.

This year’s Jazzaldia will feature myriad big-name artists and is currently working on the final details to ensure that the city will enjoy a fantastic star-packed Festival.

We now complete the programme for the coming edition of the Jazzaldia with performances to take place at the Frigo Gunea, Fnac Gunea, Nauticool, Garbera, the Club Room in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, San Martín Merkatua, María Cristina Hotel, Irun and the Fnac Foruma.
