THE SAN SEBASTIAN JAZZ FESTIVAL PROGRAMMES 60 CONCERTS ON 8 STAGES THROUGHOUT THE CITY FROM JULY 21-25

This year’s Jazzaldia, to be visited by myriad excellent artists, is busy putting the final touches to the preparations so that the city can once again enjoy a fantastic Festival. There will be 8 stages: Trinitate Plaza Keler, Kutxabank Kursaal Auditorioa, FCC Victoria Eugenia Antzokia, Škoda San Telmo Museoa, Frigo Gunea, Guuk Gunea, Chillida Leku y Kutxa Kultur Tabakalera. The venues will host 60 concerts, 29 of them free, with 4 for family audiences as part of the Txikijazz section, and another 8 corresponding to JazzEñe, the Spanish Jazz showcase hosted this year as part of Jazzaldia. Also parallel to Jazzaldia, this year will see the celebration of the fifth edition of the Jazzinema season organised by the Filmoteca Vasca, with 7 movies celebrating the extraordinary relationship enjoyed by the cinema and jazz.

Awards:

The Donostiako Jazzaldia awards will acknowledge two extensive careers dedicated to Jazz: one solo, that of Chucho Valdés; and the other as a group, that of La Locomotora Negra. Dionisio Jesús Valdés Rodríguez, better known as Chucho Valdés, will receive the Donostiako Jazzaldia Award almost twenty years after it went to his father, Bebo, at an edition where father and son took to the stage for a memorable concert at the 38th edition of Jazzaldia. La Locomotora Negra is one of the oldest Catalonian and Spanish Jazz ensembles. This year, coinciding with its 50th anniversary, the big band has decided to take to the stages for the last time. Jazzaldia will honour and thank them for all these years with its Donostiako Jazzaldia Award.

Jazzaldia wants to make sure that all Jazz aficionados unable to attend the concerts can watch those given by 18 artists in free streaming mode. The streaming programme will include 9 concerts in the Trinitate Plaza Keler, and all of those running at the FCC Victoria Eugenia Antzokia, setting this year for the 7th edition of JazzEñe. A programme packed with international stars featuring, among others, Brad Mehldau, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Kenny Barron, Noa, Arlo Parks, Mulatu Astatke, Jorge Pardo, Buika, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot

The 56th Jazzaldia, running from July 21-25, offering a total of 60 free and paying concerts in 8 venues throughout the city, will be a smoke-free space.

Paying concerts:

San Telmo Museoa: At 11 a.m., the Cloister of San Telmo Museum will host the 5 piano solo sessions starring four virtuosos in this complex and versatile speciality: on Wednesday 21, Franco D’Andrea, Italy’s master of Jazz, equally versed in traditional and avant-garde language; on the 22nd and 23rd, bringing two different programmes, the innovative and distinctive Marcin Masecki will pay tribute to the great Thelonious Monk on the first day and bring a nod back to ragtime on the second; Marco Mezquida, one of today’s most brilliant and promising pianists, will perform on July 24; and, finally, Iñaki Salvador, recipient of the Donostiako Jazzaldia award in 2020, will feature on Sunday 25. FCC Victoria Eugenia Antzokia: Every noon at 12:30, spectators can enjoy a programme dedicated to Spanish Jazz. On July 21, the doyen of Catalan Jazz, La Locomotora Negra, will take to the stage as part of its farewell tour. At the same time on the following days, from the 22nd to the 25th, the SGAE Foundation has selected some of the most interesting Spanish Jazz proposals, aiming to boost their presence on the international scene. This seventh edition of JazzEñe comes with 4 double sessions uniting the best of Spanish Jazz: on Thursday 22, the Ariel Brínguez Quintet followed by the Caminero Quintet; on July 23, the trios fronted by two great pianists, Daniel García and Chano Domínguez; on the 24th, the Catalan quintet Smack Dab and the Galician trio Sumrrá; and, finally, on Sunday 25, the trumpet player Alba Careta and the Andalusian duo Manolo y Curra. Kutxabank Kursaal Auditorioa: The Kursaal Auditorium will host a single concert every evening. Britain’s fresh young soul-folk singer, Arlo Parks, will perform on July 21 at 18:45; Buika, from the Balearic Islands, returning from a stay America and following collaborations with artists including Chick Corea, will give a concert on the 22nd at the same time; Jorge Pardo and Niño Josele will pay tribute to the self-same Chick Corea on July 23 in quartet format; and there will be yet another tribute on the 24th from the brilliant young Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi, this time to the Argentine sax player Gato Barbieri – the protagonist of excellent concerts at the Jazzaldia – at the front of the star-packed sextet “Ojos de Gato” alongside American and Transalpine musicians; finally, on July 25, at 17:30, Sílvia Pérez Cruz will take to the stage with her Farsa Circus Band to present her most recent work alongside some of our most interesting young musicians. Trinitate Plaza Keler: The double sessions closing the daily programme will kick off at the perfect Jazz time of 21:00, at least by local San Sebastian standards. First on the programme for July 21 is the quartet fronted by the trumpet player Dave Douglas and the pianist Franco D’Andrea, an Italo-American proposal from these two versatile and experienced musicians. Next, one of the finest and most interesting singers on the international Jazz scene with a bright future ahead of her, the French-American artiste Cécile McLorin Salvant will perform accompanied by her favourite pianist, Sullivan Fortner. The next day, the 22nd, the Cubans and friends since childhood Aymée Nuviola and Gonzalo Rubalcaba will offer a programme of Caribbean music and boleros with their incomparable panache; the duo will be followed by the Ethiopian vibraphonist and percussionist Mulatu Astatke, giving his first performance at the Jazzaldia. On Friday 23, two fantastic pianists, Marco Mezquida, with his latest project, Talismán, and the maestro of maestros, Kenny Barron, with an All Star Quartet notably featuring the vibraphonist Steve Nelson. The 24th will bring an unusual and exciting session when the French-Syrian flute player Naïssam Jalal takes to the stage with her quintet to bring us her extraordinary music merging East and West. Jalal will be followed by Israel’s Noa, with the guitarist Gil D’Or and the pianist from San Sebastian Iñaki Salvador, to present her recently released Afterallogy. Finally, on July 25 at 20:00, two leading lights of Jazz will make an appearance with their respective trios: the pianist Brad Mehldau, lyrical and brilliant, and the guitarist Bill Frisell, bringing his masterly and wondrous sound. Chillida Leku: As a new feature this year, the 56th Jazzaldia is organising two concerts at Chillida Leku. Both concerts will start at 19:00 to make the most of the magnificent backdrop offered by the Museum as the sun goes down. On Sunday July 18, at a pre-festival session, singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, on Saturday July 24, the Ceramic Dog trio brought to us by the always surprising guitarist Marc Ribot, will present his latest work, Hope. Tickets and passes: The tickets and passes for all paying concerts will go on sale at 11:30 on June 9. The passes, for the different venues and times, will enjoy a discount of 20% with respect to the single ticket prices. Free concerts:

A programme of free concerts will also run, open to the public, with controlled seating allocated in order of arrival, on the Kursaal terraces, Frigo Gunea and Guuk Gunea, in five sessions taking place in the afternoon-evening, from July 21 to 25. A total of 25 concerts featuring, as well as foreign artists Jean Toussaint, Éric Séva and the group Bendaki, the 10 local groups selected this year by Jazzaldia, 5 local groups to have released an album in 2019 or 2020 and 4 groups selected from the Katapulta Tour. The SGAE Foundation, in collaboration with the Donostia/San Sebastian City Council, Donostia Kultura and the 56th San Sebastian Jazz Festival, has organised the VII edition of JazzEñe, an initiative aiming to internationalise Spanish Jazz scheduled to run from July 22 to 25 in San Sebastian, in the framework of the 56th Jazzaldia. Over four days, the institution will organise a total of eight 45-minute showcase concerts featuring some of today’s most representative Spanish groups in the genre: Ariel Bríngez Quintet, Caminero Quintet, Chano Domínguez Trío, Daniel García Trío, Smack Dab, Sumrrá, Alba Careta Group and Manolo y Curra. The groups have been selected from a total of 252 applications received in response to the call for submissions issued by the SGAE Foundation to its members in the scope of Ibero-America. A committee made up of José Miguel Carmona, institutional music director at the SGAE Foundation; Javier Estrella, director of JazzEñe; Miguel Martín, director of Jazzaldia; José Franciso Tapiz, director of Tomajazz and Lara Vizuete, author and Jazz singer participant in JazzEñe2018, had the task of selecting the eight artistic proposals. Together with the audience, and invited by the SGAE Foundation, JazzEñe2021 will enjoy the presence of representatives of different European Jazz festivals and promotors interested in discovering the reality of the genre in Spain. As a complement to the concerts, all participants will have the opportunity to explain and discuss their proposals with the international guests in the endeavour to attain international collaboration agreements enabling them to take their work beyond our borders.  

Eight concerts over four days, in matinée sessions

JazzEñe2021 will offer a total of 8 concerts in four double matinée sessions (12:30pm). The concerts will be held at the Teatro Victoria Eugenia and the tickets will go on sale shortly. The event will kick off on July 22 at 12:30 with the Ariel Brínguez Quintet, who will present Nostalgia Cubana, a journey to the Cuban soundscapes of the 50s paying tribute to the forms cultivated by great artists including Bola de Nieve, José Antonio Méndez, Eliseo Grenet, Cachaíto López and Juanito Márquez, among others. An hour later, in the second session, it will be the turn of the Caminero Quintet, an ensemble headed by Pablo Martín Caminero combining Jazz and flamenco. Pablo touches down in JazzEñe2021 with his latest work, Bost, in which he revisits the traditional flamenco palos such as granaína, siguiriya, bulería or soleá from his particular point of view. The following day, on Friday July 23, the Daniel García Trío will give a live performance of their latest and energetic Travesuras, which has taken them to some of the biggest European stages. Daniel García Diego, Reinier “El Negrón” and Michael Olivera make up one of the strongest and most original European Jazz trios. The event will end at 13:30 with the live show by the Chano Domínguez Trío, who will perform Chumbulum, an album in which they recover hitherto unheard-of compositions never recorded before while offering original pieces created during the lockdown. Rounding off the ensemble are Horacio Fumero, Argentine bassist and regular collaborator of Tete Montoliu and Gato Barbieri, and the multi-talented David Xirgú on the drums, the perfect bill to convey the beauty and charm of this unique Spanish Jazz mixture. Having become one of the most consolidated projects on the Catalan Jazz scene, Smack Dab will open the third day (July 24) of JazzEñe2021. Here, the quintet featuring Joan Casares, Oriol Vallès, Lluc Casares, Jöel González and Pau Sala builds a space from which to review their careers bestride the tradition of Jazz and Afro-American music from collective freedom and improvisation. The day will end with the proposal of the Galician trio, Sumrrá, who, after a career of 21 years, present their seventh studio album: Sumrrá 7 Visións. Pianist Manuel Gutiérrez, bassist Xacobe Martínez Antelo and drummer L.A.R. Legido reflect with seven powerful and lucid points of view on the present time, where we come from and where we’re going. The JazzEñe2021 will be brought to an end on July 25 by the last two groups: the Alba Careta Group and the duo Javier Galiana and María La Mónica: Manolo y Curra. Alba Careta Group returns at the head of one of the Catalan Jazz scene’s most promising bands, with Alades, her second album, with which she displays the experiences of her recent years studying the trumpet in Amsterdam, subtly and with an organic and emotional language that confirms her place as one of the leading lights of contemporary Spanish Jazz. This is a time for prudence; but it is also a time to maintain the cultural offer, to meet with social distancing, precaution and a mask, so that we can enjoy music. We present the 56th San Sebastian Jazz Festival. With all sorts of caveats. We don’t know how many people will be able to attend the concerts or at what time; nor do we know if we’ll be able to move around freely. We’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out. The artists we mention below have confirmed their desire to come to the 56th Jazzaldia. That’s why, with excitement, we give you their names; so that you can start getting used to the idea. This will be a Festival of female voices: the great Cécile McLorin Salvant; Noa, in collaboration with the pianist from San Sebastian, Iñaki Salvador; Buika, sweet and sensual; Arlo Parks, London’s new sensation; the Cuban Aymée Nuviola; and, of course, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, with the Farsa Circus Band. It will also be a Festival of pianists; to that of the aforementioned Iñaki Salvador we must add further names: the Italians Franco D’Andrea, glorious doyen of transalpine musicians, and Giovanni Guidi, budding star of European jazz; the genius Brad Mehldau; the indispensable and sensational Kenny Barron; Gonzalo Rubalcaba, supreme Caribbean virtuoso; Poland’s Marcin Masecki, versatile and unpredictable; and Marco Mezquida, with his new project, another step forward in his irrepressible rise to musical stardom. Dave Douglas, dexterous trumpet player; the Ethiopian vibraphonist and percussionist Mulatu Astatke; the distinguished bass player Dave Holland; the sax player Jean Toussaint, disciple of the Jazz Messengers’ Blakey School of Music; the sax player Eric Seva, with a fantastic homage to the album Summit in which Gerry Mulligan and Astor Piazzolla merged their sounds and ideas; the surprising flute player Naïssam Jalal and the guitarist Bill Frisell are among the other musicians who have promised to attend and participate in the coming 56th Jazzaldia. The 56th San Sebastian Jazz Festival, to run from July 21-25, now has its poster, work of the animator, director and animation producer, Isabel Herguera

The title of the poster is “Bye Bye Blues”. In the artist’s own words: “The poster is a farewell to the strange and painful year we have just lived through. It is also a homage to all of the women who have their place in the history of jazz past and present”.

Bye Bye Blues is, furthermore, a popular and jazz standard. Composed in 1925 by Fred Hamm, Dave Bennet, Bert Lown and Chauncey Gray, the song hit the charts with the version by Les Paul and Mary Ford in 1952. Although it has been performed by countless artists over the years, Isabel Herguera has taken two of these versions as her reference: the one by Julie London dating from 1957 and Cab Calloway’s 1940 instrumental.

Isabel Herguera:

Born in Donostia/San Sebastian in 1961. Studied at the Bilbao Faculty of Fine Arts, at the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf, and completed her training at California Institute of the Arts. For a decade she worked at different animation studios in Los Angeles. In 2003 she returned to Europe and made several short films selected for festivals including Annecy, Rotterdam and Ann Arbor, among others.

She has given numerous courses and workshops at: California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles; Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba; Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. She was guest professor at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India. She also designed and coordinated the Moving Image Laboratory at Arteleku.

Herguera has been widely recognised, having won numerous awards for her animation work, among which are particularly La Gallina Ciega (nominated for the Best Animated Short Film Goya 2006), Bajo la almohada (Under the Pillow, UNICEF award at Zinebi 2012) and Amore d’inverno (Best Basque Film 2015).

From 2003 until 2011 she directed the International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia, in Lleida, an event which received the National Audiovisual Award from the Consell Nacional de la Cultura i de les Arts in 2009.

Today she alternates her teaching work at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne, Germany, with the production of her first feature film, El sueño de la sultana (Sultana’s Dream).

The public response to the situation was exemplary, demonstrating great responsibility, yet with no loss of enthusiasm and almost full capacity at all venues. We must also highlight the total absence of incidents. This year, for the first time, we gave three Donostiako Jazzaldia Awards, an extremely well-deserved recognition for three Jazz geniuses: Jorge Pardo, Chano Domínguez and Iñaki Salvador. All three also took the centre stage, either together, or with their bands, to give memorable concerts at the main Jazzaldia venues: the Plaza de la Trinidad, the Kursaal Auditorium and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. Alongside the afore mentioned figures, we had the opportunity to enjoy a selection of the best Spanish artists and groups. All of them, delighted at being able to give live concerts once again, brought us incredible moments packed with musical quality and art: Chano Domínguez, Marco Mezquida, Perico Sambeat, Carles Benavent, Chicuelo, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Antonio Serrano, Raül Refree with the Portuguese singer Lina, Josemi Carmona, Tino di Geraldo... We also had concerts by Basque groups and artists of spectacular calibre. In the “Trini”, Oreka TX and Michel Portal gave two concerts, also leaving us with a joint improvisation that will stay with us forever. San Sebastian’s Iñaki Salvador with two concerts, one at the Kursaal together with Chano Domínguez, and the other at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre with Jorge Pardo and Bizkaia’s Borja Barrueta, who also performed with Pamplona’s Javier Colina in the “Trini”. In the San Telmo Museum cloister two pianists from San Sebastian, Paul San Martín and Mikel Azpiroz. And on the last day of the Festival, at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, Joseba Irazoki with his friends. Completing the list of local performers, we also had the opportunity to see many young artists on the Kursaal Terraces, where we introduced a new format encompassing 21 concerts, all free of charge and with controlled audience numbers, in a space which turned out to be a magnificent spot to have a drink while enjoying great live music, all with spectacular views and the fantastic weather that accompanied us throughout the whole Festival. Three of this year’s best concerts featured Portuguese artists: Lina together with the Catalan Raül Refree at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, Salvador Sobral at the Kursaal and Mariza in the Plaza de la Trinidad. The remaining artists, although some of them live in Spain, hailed from other countries: Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Serbia, the United States... Rymden, Joachim Kühn, Anja Lechner, François Couturier, Bojan Z., Randy Greer (who lives in Valencia), Sean Clapis (who lives in Madrid)... One new feature this year took the shape of the concerts given in streaming mode, a total of 15 performances, followed live by myriad aficionados all over the world and which have already clocked up more than 14,000 viewings. A service offering free concerts and admission for those unable to attend the concerts in person. Also worthy of note is the fact that we now have 34,000 followers on social media. The eighth edition of Txikijazz brought 4 concerts which were hugely enjoyed and appreciated by the families who came along to watch them on the Kutxa Kultur Terrace at Tabakalera and on the Kursaal Terraces. At the end of the day, a Festival to remember both for the excellent quality of the concerts and for the incredible response of the Jazz aficionados, despite the adverse circumstances. Trusting that by then audience numbers will have returned to their original capacities and the conditions will have been restored to normal, part of the programme will be recovered, while hugely important names are also added to the Festival line up. Stellar incorporations to the next edition of the Jazzaldia are Herbie Hancock, Gregory Porter, Mulatu Astatke, Yann Tiersen, Brad Mehldau and the young female saxophonist, Lakecia Benjamin. THE SAN SEBASTIAN JAZZ FESTIVAL PROGRAMMES 60 CONCERTS ON 8 STAGES THROUGHOUT THE CITY FROM JULY 21-25

This year’s Jazzaldia, to be visited by myriad excellent artists, is busy putting the final touches to the preparations so that the city can once again enjoy a fantastic Festival. There will be 8 stages: Trinitate Plaza Keler, Kutxabank Kursaal Auditorioa, FCC Victoria Eugenia Antzokia, Škoda San Telmo Museoa, Frigo Gunea, Guuk Gunea, Chillida Leku y Kutxa Kultur Tabakalera. The venues will host 60 concerts, 29 of them free, with 4 for family audiences as part of the Txikijazz section, and another 8 corresponding to JazzEñe, the Spanish Jazz showcase hosted this year as part of Jazzaldia. Also parallel to Jazzaldia, this year will see the celebration of the fifth edition of the Jazzinema season organised by the Filmoteca Vasca, with 7 movies celebrating the extraordinary relationship enjoyed by the cinema and jazz.

Awards:

The Donostiako Jazzaldia awards will acknowledge two extensive careers dedicated to Jazz: one solo, that of Chucho Valdés; and the other as a group, that of La Locomotora Negra. Dionisio Jesús Valdés Rodríguez, better known as Chucho Valdés, will receive the Donostiako Jazzaldia Award almost twenty years after it went to his father, Bebo, at an edition where father and son took to the stage for a memorable concert at the 38th edition of Jazzaldia. La Locomotora Negra is one of the oldest Catalonian and Spanish Jazz ensembles. This year, coinciding with its 50th anniversary, the big band has decided to take to the stages for the last time. Jazzaldia will honour and thank them for all these years with its Donostiako Jazzaldia Award.

Jazzaldia wants to make sure that all Jazz aficionados unable to attend the concerts can watch those given by 18 artists in free streaming mode. The streaming programme will include 9 concerts in the Trinitate Plaza Keler, and all of those running at the FCC Victoria Eugenia Antzokia, setting this year for the 7th edition of JazzEñe.
