Yoshuke Yamashita was back at San Telmo Museoa yesterday, but this time with improvised takes on popular classics.

The concerts in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre as part of JazzEñe, the Jazz Showcase for international programmers, opened with the concert by the pianist and composer Lucia Rey combining a variety of styles including flamenco, Latin Jazz, Mediterranean, classic, pop music… The quartet Move also gave their concert on this first day of JazzEñe.

Damir Imamović gave his second concert at this year’s Jazzaldia on the Frigo Gunea stage, following The Mississippians Big Band. The Basque group Xahu brought the concerts on the Kursaal terrace to a close. The Fnac Forum provided the setting for the concert by the Trio Nordeste.

At the Fnac Gunea, Isla Trío gave a concert with space for improvisation and free sound followed by blues from the local quartet, Motelas.

The Japanese pianist Yosuke Yamashita, who will receive the Donostiako Jazzaldia Award on Sunday 23 July, charmed the audience with tunes from her recent album of piano solos, Quiet Memories, one of the Solo Piano concerts running in the Skoda San Telmo Museoa cloister from yesterday and continuing over the next four days.

The Kursaal Auditorioa opened its doors to this year’s Jazzaldia with the concert by Kenny Barron, the pianist and composer who celebrated his 80th birthday performing the greatest numbers in his career accompanied by the Basque Youth Orchestra.

The evocative voice of Bosnian singer Damir Imamović and the kemençe of Turkey’s Derya Türkan opened the Frigo Gunea stage, also joined by the Norwegian trio The Side Effects.

Sara Dowling’s talent as a vocalist delighted a Frigo Gunea audience captivated by her boundless energy. The Nauticool was full for the concert by the Basque group Arima Soul who played their own songs in Basque along with covers of famous Soul numbers.

Euskorleans, the project merging Basque music and dance with New Orleans brass bands and Jazz, will take to the streets of the city on 20 July, eve of the official Festival opening

The project born from the collaboration between Kukai Dantza and the musician L.M. Moreno, aka "Pirata", will offer a fun and festive celebration, a foretaste to welcome the 58th Jazzaldia.

They will stop four times on their route: the Sagües esplanade, the Kursaal (beside the entrance to the car park), the Boulevard Music Stand and beside the Náutico yacht club. Euskorleans will kick off at 19:00 from Sagües, pausing at each stop to perform 20-25 minute dance routines accompanied by the band.

The Filmoteca Vasca programmes, in Tabakalera, the four films making up the Jazzinema season: Soul (Pete Docter, Kemp Powers, 2020), Rewind & Play (Alain Gomis, 2022), Young Man with a Horn (Michael Curtiz, 1950) and the premiere of Blue Giant (Yuzuru Tachikawa, 2023).

The screenings will run every Friday, at 19:00, from 7-28 July. Miguel Martin, director of Jazzaldia and Joxean Fernández, director of the Filmoteca Vasca, will introduce the season prior to the screening of Soul, on 7 July.

The Jazzinema season started in 2017, promoted by the Filmoteca Vasca in collaboration with the Donostiako Jazzaldia and the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival.
