About JazzEñe

JazzEñe is a programme organised by the SGAE Foundation, created to bring Spanish jazz onto the international scene, provide incentive for the participation of jazz bands in festivals, promote international tours by members of the SGAE and foster a coming together and exchange of experiences and knowledge between professionals in the sector (writers, artists, managers, programmers, festival directors, record labels) from here and from around the world.

Following its first edition, held in Madrid in 2014, the event moved to the city of Valencia and on to Zaragoza and Malaga. Now, in its ninth edition, this cycle bringing the reality of Spanish jazz to the audience and directors of European festivals will once again run as part of the San Sebastian Jazz Festival which, in its 58th year, represents one of the leading proponents of jazz, not only in Spain, but also in Europe and the rest of the world.

Over the years, numerous artists have performed their repertoires at festivals throughout Europe thanks to the Eñe programmes organised by the SGAE Foundation. Artists Chicuelo & Mezquida, featured at the Zaragoza edition, went on to perform at the Tokyo Jazz Festival. And, in 2018, the SGAE Foundation presented Eñe artists Antonio Lizana, Rycardo Moreno and Pedro el Granaíno at the Flamenco Biënnale’s White Nights project in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Also deserving a special mention is the participation in 2017 at the Amersfoort World Jazz Festival (Netherlands) of four groups to have participated in JazzEñe: Camerata Flamenco Project, Nono Garcia Trío, Alexey Leon Trío and Marco Mezquida Solo. In 2022 the Festival opened its doors to Basque groups, programming Oreka TX, whose distinctive and peculiar sound is that of the txalaparta.

8 free concerts: Village People + Fred Wesley & the New JBs + Tiken Jah Fakoly + Viva Suecia + Arde Bogotá + Ezra Collective + Blue Lab Beats + ZETAK

Diversity is the overriding note of the Keler Gunea programme for San Sebastian’s 58th Jazz Festival. Diversity of styles where you’ll be treated to funk, disco, reggae, Jazz, indie pop-rock and electronic music. Diversity of artist origins: European, African and American. And diversity of generations too, featuring emerging groups and artists like the Ezra Collective, Blue Lab Beats, ZETAK and Arde Bogotá; others more long standing like Tiken Jah Fakoly and Viva Suecia; and veteran legends like Fred Wesley and Village People.

KELER, our main sponsor, gives its name to this stage, the KELER GUNEA, which, like in previous years, can be found on the beach, next to the Zurriola breakwater.

This stage will host two free concerts every day from 21-24 July.

21 July

Village People (20:45)

Fun and dance are guaranteed with Village People, one of the biggest groups in the history of pop music. Their songs with their catchy choruses are known by millions of people, and have been sung and danced by several generations all over the world.

- Fred Wesley & the New JBs (23:30)

The great North American trombone player is, without a doubt, one of the best composers and arrangers in the history of funk and Afro-American sounds.

His music is one of the most sampled of all times and, in his long career, Wesley has worked with big-name musicians including James Brown, as his music director, George Clinton, Ike and Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Maceo Parker, Count Basie, Van Morrison, Earth Wind & Fire, Pee Wee Ellis, Vanessa Williams, The S.O.S. Band, Cameo, De La Soul, Curtis Mayfield, Usher...

22 July

- Blue Lab Beats (21:00)

Possibly the band that best reflects the prevailing creative, fresh and innovative spirit of London’s ebullient Jazz scene. Taking their inspiration from the major works in the history of Jazz and from the pioneers of hip-hop’s golden age, NK OK and MR DM turn out elegant, urban and extremely cool music of unquestionable quality.

- Viva Suecia (23:30)

This group hailing from Murcia brings melodic forcefulness, profound lyrics and epic guitars. But it’s in their live performances that Viva Suecia unfolds their many virtues and where their songs reach their highest expression. Guided by Rafa Val on vocals, the group will roll out its arsenal of hits, anthems chanted by their fans who are certain to pack the Zurriola beach.

23 July

- Arde Bogotá (21:00)

The Spanish-language rock produced by these youngsters from Murcia has enthralled thousands of fans with its powerful and distinct sound. Lyrics packed with content that conveys anger and irreverence, yet also talking about seduction, love and the chiaroscuros of their generation. Their live shows, accomplished and energetic, are delivered by frontman Antonio García, a livewire on stage who soon has everyone up dancing and singing along to their songs.

- Tiken Jah Fakoly (23:30)

the Côte d’Ivoire whose songs combine reggae with dub and soukous beats, recovering traditional African instruments such as the kora, the ngoni and the balafon.

His committed, revolutionary lyrics, stories of hard lives, of injustices and calamities are sung with a contrasting uplifting beat, creating songs to dance to and spreading an optimism that stands above all misfortunes.

24 July

- Ezra Collective (21:00)

The music brought to us by this London quintet is a celebration of life, packed with positive energy and great dance beats combining myriad styles and influences: Jazz, Afro beat, Afro Cuban, funky, salsa, grime, hip-hop, R&B, samba… A fabulous opportunity to have fun, dance and let yourself go, on the beach, with the energy, the joy, the magic and the multicultural sophistication of this group. Today’s Jazz!!

- ZETAK (23:30)

Since forming in 2019 ZETAK, fronted by Pello Reparaz, has released two successful albums and numerous singles that have racked up millions of streamings, huge hits in the Basque music scene that have gone on to become anthems for a whole generation: Zeinen Ederra Izango Den, Errepidean, Zoriontasuna… Electronic pop with catchy melodies, sung in Basque.

Tickets and passes go on sale for the Plaza de la Trinidad, Kursaal Auditorium, San Telmo Museum and Victoria Eugenia Theatre

For years the San Sebastian Jazz Festival had harboured the wish of billing Norah Jones in the city. That dream will come true on 22 July when the singer performs at the Kursaal Auditorium.

Another of the aims fulfilled is being able to enjoy two British artists we have tried to bill for several editions, and who will perform in the Plaza de la Trinidad this year: the singer Joss Stone and the saxophone player Nubya Garcia.

Completing our wish list are Ben Harper, who will perform for the first time at the Jazzaldia; and Enrico Rava, who had to postpone his show because of the pandemic, and who will finally come to this year’s San Sebastian Jazz Festival.

The programme for the paying concerts at the 58th Jazzaldia, to run from 21-25 July 2023, is varied, intense and hugely attractive.

The Plaza de la Trinidad

This, Jazzaldia’s most iconic stage, will offer a programme of performances by legendary artists and brilliant new arrivals. Alongside classics such as Enrico Rava, with a quintet of emerging Italian musicians, and the great Abdullah Ibrahim with his trio, will be a new music quartet brought by a musician whose last performance at our Festival was simply marvellous: Bill Frisell. However, the Trini will also feature the presence of fantastic new names: the extraordinary guitarist Julian Lage, the above-mentioned Joss Stone and Nubya Garcia, and the superb Austrian keyboard-player David Helbock, with his latest project: the superband, Austrian Syndicate.

Kursaal Auditorium

We will celebrate the 80th birthday of Kenny Barron, the best Jazz pianist still performing today, accompanied by the Basque Youth Orchestra (EGO) in their first appearance at the Jazzaldia.

Norah Jones, the star attraction on the programme, will perform on 22 July in what will be the first ever show given by the great pianist and singer in our city.

On the 23rd Ben Harper, the quintessential leading light of contemporary blues, will take to the stage.

On Monday 24, one of the all-time Jazz greats, Pat Metheny, with his Side Eye project, will perform in the company of some of the best up-and-coming names in the new generation of American musicians.

And, finally, on Tuesday 25th July, one of the most creative and exciting proposals on the Spanish scene, the singer Rocío Márquez with the musician and producer BRONQUIO.

San Telmo Museum

Next year, 2023, is Basque Country-Japan year. To celebrate it, the 58th Jazzaldia will programme a piano season in the marvellous Museum cloister, exclusively dedicated to Japanese pianists.

The most important of all, and one of the country’s most universal musicians, is Yosuke Yamashita. His importance on the Jazz scene is enormous and his prestige incomparable. Yosuke will give two concerts: one dedicated to standard numbers and his own compositions, and the other to his particular and passionate take on the classical repertoire including Ravel’s Bolero and G. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, among others.

The other three pianists, Kento Tsubosaka, Hakuei Kim, and Eri Yamamoto, who already played in the city, complete a thrilling season of the very highest musical quality.

Victoria Eugenia Theatre

Also going on sale, although the performing groups won’t be known in detail until April, are tickets for the JazzEñe season, to take place once again in the framework of the San Sebastian Jazz Festival. This will be the ninth edition of JazzEñe during which, for four days from 22-25 July, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy 8 artists selected by the SGAE Foundation in its endeavour to attract attention to Spanish Jazz and take it into the international arena.

Tickets and Passes

Tickets for the Plaza de la Trinidad, Kursaal Auditorium, San Telmo Museum and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre will go on sale at 11:30 on 15 December. Tickets can be purchased in person from the theatre desk and online, via the Jazzaldia (www.jazzaldia.eus) and Donostia Kultura (www.donostiakultura.eus) websites.

Programme of free concerts

Although tickets go on sale today for the paying concerts, we still have heaps to announce on the Jazzaldia programme, all equally or more important than the names already revealed. Here we refer to the free concerts that will pack the streets of our city like every year.

In the coming months we will announce all these free concerts to run on stages such as the Nauticool, the Kursaal Terraces and the Keler Gunea. This latter stage, the most popular, on the Zurriola Beach, is once again named after Keler, our main sponsor for yet another edition.

Roskow, the artist from San Sebastian, is the author of the poster for the 58th San Sebastian Jazz Festival. Accompanying the poster titled Free Jazz are another three illustrations to appear on the banners hanging throughout the city during the Jazzaldia. 58 copies of the poster and of each banner are now available for purchase in NFT format.

Roskow previously created the poster for the Jazzaldia in 2017, with an illustration representing a concert in the Plaza de la Trinidad. Six years later, he has once again created the poster and the three illustrations that go with it.

The idea for the poster comes from a small painting made by Roskow some years ago, a sketch on paper representing the ‘cubes’ of the Kursaal with the figure of a woman in the forefront. Later, the artist decided that the woman would be a saxophone player and included a percussionist and bass player to complete the band. The concept is simple, a Jazz trio playing in the street at dusk for what could be a celebration or meeting at the entrance to the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, where we imagine there is an audience listening to them. In the background, veiled in the nocturnal cloak so closely linked to Jazz music, is the true protagonist of the poster, the city, with a view of the bridge and the Kursaal.

To accentuate the feeling of a short story, somewhere between fiction and reality, and designed to lend variety to the banners, Roskow has produced another three illustrations. Each features the musicians individually, posing in photocall mode against the same backdrop of the bridge and the Kursaal.

Roskow

Roskow is the artistic pseudonym of Fernando Huarte Campión, an artist from San Sebastian who lives and works in his home city. From his “operations centre” in the district of Egia, he creates and produces his artistic work with a do-it-yourself approach to production and creative independence: painting on canvas, engraving, digital illustration, silk screening…

Trained as a sculptor in the 80s at the Applied Arts schools of San Sebastian, Seville and La Palma in Madrid, his work is, in the main, pictorial, with the odd foray into engraving, illustration, album and book covers, and poster design.

Roskow’s paintings and engravings have their own easily recognisable style and take their inspiration from illustration, comics and the iconography of punk and new wave in the 80s and 90s. He is also passionate about the Middle Ages, Romanesque art, gothic paintings, the Flemish school and 20th century avant-garde painting. One of his main sources of inspiration is San Sebastian, “a city that just keeps on giving”. As he says: “I love painting San Sebastian, especially its architecture”.

Today he shares a space with the team of illustrators, photographers and artists at Lance&Malone. He is also preparing a major exhibition for the Galería Arteko, with which he has been working for several years.

In addition to these activities, Roskow has a more relaxed musical side that he loves and enjoys. It all started in the 80s with a group called the Elásticos, who later became the Rígidos and finally Los Hormigones. Today he continues to compose, recording and performing countless own numbers.

Roskow’s artwork can be found here: www.roskow.com And his musical production, here: www.loshormigones.com

NFT

58 copies of the poster and each of the banners for this edition of the Jazzaldia are now available for collectors and aficionados. The 4 works can be purchased in euros, either separately or at a discount of 20% for all 4. Every person buying an original NFT published for this year will have an additional reward: two free tickets to a concert at the San Sebastian Jazz Festival by Los Hormigones, the group fronted by Roskow, at a place, date and time still to be decided.

All related information can be found on our website, where you will also find explanations and information on NFTs, what they are and how they work.

In view of the success enjoyed by last year’s poster in NFT format, we now offer a second opportunity to use this technology as a service for those wishing to purchase and collect this type of artistic creations, in digital format and with their corresponding certificates.

To create and launch this process, we have worked with the company Bakarts and the posters can be purchased from their website (https://bakarts.io/). For the process of creating the NFTs we have worked with the Polygon blockchain network. This network’s technology means that the energy consumption for the transactions and process involved in the creating these NFTs is extremely low. The energy required to generate an NFT with this platform is the same as paying for a transaction with a credit card.
