John Zorn’s Bagatelles Marathon will also feature on the programme, as previously announced
The Heineken Jazzaldia has released a preview of the programme for its 54th edition, to take place from 24th-28th July 2019, already featuring some of the leading contemporary jazz artists in greatest public demand.
Diana Krall, Jamie Cullum and Neneh Cherry could headline the bill at any festival, and all three will appear at the Heineken Jazzaldia. Also enormously interesting are the new projects by Joshua Redman, Maria Schneider and Donny McCaslin, added to which Schneider and McCaslin will unite to perform a composition by Schneider in memory of David Bowie.
Diana Krall is sublime both as a pianist and as a singer. Her stage elegance, her repertoire invariably selected with such fine taste and her irrefutable accomplishment have made hers an essential jazz name in the last two decades. She also has a gift for choosing her collaborators. This time round, she’s coming with Joe Lovano as her guest artist, in other words, with one of the top saxophone players on the world jazz panorama, always brilliant at the front of his own groups and a luxurious companion when joining other figures, like in this case. Backed by Lovano, Diana Kralle is expected to give an extraordinary concert, supported by her regulars, Robert Hurst (double bass) and Karriem Riggins (drums).
Jamie Cullum needs no introduction in San Sebastian. He left his exquisite visiting card in 2015, when he rolled out an astonishing display of his versatility in three
performances: as a DJ, as a piano soloist and with his band. Cullum represents enthusiasm, contagious joy, boundless energy and vast amounts of music. He brings tears to the eyes when sitting at the piano to sing like the old crooners, and electrifies the audience when fronting his group. An early starter who still has a very long way to go.
Maria Schneider comes to the Heineken Jazzaldia for the first time to display her suggestive project with Ensemble Denada. Schneider is a prizewinning orchestra conductor and composer, winner of 5 Grammys, hailed by critics and audiences as one of the most decisive figures of today’s jazz. Only someone with her talent could lead a band like Norway’s Ensemble Denada, considered one of the most innovative in Europe. The group’s repertoire varies widely in both rhythm and melody, and its members have been carefully selected from among Norway’s best instrumentalists.
Donny McCaslin surprised a good part of the public with his fabulous performance at the Heineken Jazzaldia in 2017. Those who already knew him (he had been here in 2016 as part of the Steps Ahead Reunion Tour, and he participated in Blackstar, David Bowie’s last eternal album) were ready and waiting, but for those who discovered him at that time he was all of a revelation. McCaslin has notched up important experience in the jazz world thanks to his collaborations with Steps Ahead, Gil Evans, Danilo Pérez and Dave Douglas; he also landed a nomination for best jazz instrumental solo at the Grammys in 2004.
Donny McCaslin and Maria Schneider have formerly worked together and will coincide at the same Festival session. The first part will be brought to us by McCaslin as a quintet and the second will see Maria Schneider perform with Ensemble Denada on Sue (Or in a Season of Crime), the song she composed for Bowie in 2014, which earned her a Grammy and planted the seed of Blackstar. It is precisely Schneider who recommended Donny McCaslin to Bowie for recording Blackstar.
The singer Neneh Cherry has developed a sparkling and diverse career, becoming a great international figure thanks to songs like Woman and 7 Seconds or to her impressive version of Cole Porter’s classic, I've Got You Under My Skin. She has also promoted innovative projects including her collaboration with Scandinavia’s experimental jazz trio, The Thing, at the Heineken Jazzaldia in 2012, or CirKus, with which she performed in San Sebastian in 2007. Interest in the mise en scene of her most recent album, Broken Politics (2018) is causing great expectation.
Joshua Redman is one of the most charismatic sax players to have come out of the 90s. He is coming to present Still Dreaming, which we are fully justified in saying has been one of the most impeccable jazz albums of those released in 2018. With him he will bring an exceptional line-up: Ron Miles on the trumpet, Scott Colley on the double bass, and Dave King on drums.
As previously announced, John Zorn will return to the Heineken Jazzaldia following the resounding success of his Masada Marathon in 2013. This time round, he’ll do it as the frontman of the Bagatelles Marathon, split into two afternoon sessions at the Kursaal Auditorium; one on July 27th and the other on July 28th.
The musical marathon will involve 14 different ensembles who will perform more than 50 compositions from The Bagatelles, John Zorn’s expansive new book of music.
Among the more than thirty participating musicians are Mary Halvorson, Marc Ribot, Kris Davis, Julian Lage, Dave Douglas, Joey Baron, Craig Taborn, Peter Evans, John Medeski, Ikue Mori, Erik Friedlander, Mark Feldman, Sylvie Courvoisier, Kenny Wollesen, Trevor Dunn and many more who understand Zorn’s creative universe like nobody else.
We will shortly announce more artists who will complete the programme of the 54th Heineken Jazzaldia. Tickets will go on sale in mid-February.

The twenty-six year old French pianist and composer Adrien Brandeis is the winner of this year’s edition of the Rising Stars Jazz Award, an accolade accompanied by the opportunity to perform at seven of Europe’s leading jazz festivals, among which are the Heineken Jazzaldia, to run in San Sebastian from 24-28 July 2019.
Adrien Brandeis won a hard-fought competition with more than 230 artists from all over Europe. The award has the aim of discovering new European jazz talents and helping them to develop their careers.
Sitting on the award Jury, among others, were the English singer and pianist Jamie Cullum, one of today’s jazz superstars; Alex Dutilh, the radio host of France Musique’s Open Jazz programme; Wulf Müller, from the German record label Okeh Records; and the journalist Karen Frivik, from Norway’s public radio station, NRK.
On announcing the name of the winner, the Jury said: “A list of 25 highly skilled and talented artists made it to the final round. Finding the winner was not an easy task but Adrien Brandeis nos convinced us with his outstanding musicianship and innovative approach. We are certain that we will hear a lot about him in the future”.
As winner of the award, the music of Adrien Brandeis receives PR and marketing support through the prestigious Air Artist Agency, including a performance at seven major European jazz festivals. As well as the above-mentioned Heineken Jazzaldia, the list includes the Nice Jazz Festival (France), Kongsberg Jazz Festival (Norway), JazzOpen (Stuttgart, Germany), Umbria Jazz (Italy), Leopolis Jazz Festival (Lviv, Ukraine) and Love Supreme (United Kingdom).
Adrien Brandeis is a French jazz pianist and composer born in Annecy in 1992. After having studied at the Nice and Paris Conservatoires with Robert Persi and Manuel Rocheman, he produced and released his first album, Euforia, in 2018. Influenced by Michel Camilo, Bill Evans and Chick Corea, he is steeped in Jazz, Latin and Afro-Caribbean music. Brandeis displays great lyricism in his playing, combined with an urban pianistic approach.

The Masada Marathon of 2013, similar in format to the Bagatelles Marathon, is remembered as one of the culminating moments in the history of the Festival
John Zorn will return to San Sebastian, to the Heineken Jazzaldia, after the resounding success achieved in 2013, at the 48th edition of the Festival, with his Masada Marathon. This time, he will do it as the frontman of the Bagatelles Marathon, divided into two afternoon sessions at the Kursaal Auditorium, one on July 27th and the other on July 28th.
From March to May 2015, John Zorn wrote 300 new compositions compiled in a book of music called The Bagatelles. This special marathon concert, divided into two sessions, features 14 different ensembles performing over 50 compositions from Zorn’s expansive new book of music.
The more than thirty participating musicians will include Mary Halvorson, Marc Ribot, Kris Davis, Julian Lage, Dave Douglas, Joey Baron, Craig Taborn, Peter Evans, John Medeski, Ikue Mori, Erik Friedlander, Mark Feldman, Sylvie Courvoisier, Kenny Wollesen, Trevor Dunn and many others who understand Zorn’s creative universe like nobody else.
The 2013 Masada Marathon brought almost five hours of nonstop music to the Kursaal Auditorium, with a line-up of 12 ensembles featuring most of the musicians listed above, although now, for the Bagatelles Marathon, we will find some new and high-caliber additions, such as Mary Halvorson, Julian Lage, Kris Davis, Craig Taborn, Peter Evans, and John Medeski.
Masada Marathon was unanimously acclaimed by the critics and the audience was left with the feeling of having lived a historical moment. Numerous aficionados referred to that concert as one of the best in the history of the Festival.
Bagatelles Marathon shares the same concept, except that this time round the number of ensembles rises to 14 and each group will play for between 20 and 25 minutes. That’s why the decision was taken to divide the concert into two sessions at the Kursaal Auditorium, on July 27th and 28th.
Bagatelles Marathon is a fascinating microcosm of John Zorn’s musical universe, including core members of his inner circle as well as exciting new players from the worlds of rock, jazz and classical music, all outstanding members of New York City’s vibrant downtown community.
Tickets for the Bagatelles Marathon will go on sale when we announce the full programme of the 54th Heineken Jazzaldia, to run from 24th to 28th July 2019. The Festival organisation is already working on the programme and hopes to be able to announce it around February 2019.

There have been so many sterling artists this 53 Heineken Jazzaldia that it is difficult to highlight any of them more than others. The musical standard was very high, among the highest of the Festival’s latest editions, and the response of the public exemplary, something which is no exception to the rule at this event.
The number of spectators between the paying and free concerts (the latter amounting to two-thirds of the total), came to 171,500.
Some of the performances will remain on the minds of spectators for years to come. Particularly the extraordinary evening of 27th July in the Plaza de la Trinidad. A first part featuring a trio of masters who have absolute understanding of one another and are riding the crest of a creative wave: Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain and Chris Potter. In the second, a recent arrival who will hit any heights she sets herself, because she has no limits of technique, of sensitivity, or of stage sympathy: the singer Cécile McLorin Salvant. She drew several rounds of enthusiastic applause from the public packed into the venue.
And the 29th was equally great, one of the Festival’s finest moments. In the afternoon at the Kursaal, Gregory Porter singing Nat “King” Cole’s repertoire, backed by an enormous orchestra of fifty of the very finest musicians in the Basque Country conducted by Arkaitz Mendoza. Few, if any, are those who can recreate the incomparable Cole better than Porter thanks to his ability to thrill, already proven at the Festival on previous occasions. And in the evening Yann Tiersen, an intimate evening of solo piano. In the Trinidad, Chick Corea in an acoustic trio with John Patitucci and Dave Weckl, the musicians with whom he has enjoyed greatest understanding in recent times, and Curtis Stigers, one of the great vocalists of the moment, of the kind who have the audience eating out of their hand from the moment of singing their very first note.
The Kursaal Auditorium was a sure-fire success thanks to its four aces plus wildcard: the Veloso siblings gathered around their patriarch, Caetano; Brad Mehldau, who continues to surprise even his many unconditional followers, not even he knows his creative limits; Kenny Barron, an enormously elegant pianist; the aforementioned Gregory Porter; and Yann Tiersen, with his also already mentioned intimate evening solo on the piano.
The vocalist Mary Stallings humbly received her Donostiako Jazzaldia Award. She said that she doesn’t consider herself to be a great singer, but rather a teller of stories from the heart. But she’s a lot more important in the history of jazz than she believes. Cécil McLorin Salvant admitted to being among her admirers and invited her up onto the stage of the Trini for a blues duo. Earlier, Stallings had given a warm, unassuming concert in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. And yes, she did sing from the heart.
The other Donostiako Jazzaldia Award went to Michel Portal, who gave two concerts: one in trio format with Vincent Peirani and Émile Parisien, and other as a guest on Parisien’s project entitled Sfumato. Portal, from Baiona, is the front-runner of Basque jazz musicians and an enormously influential figure in French and European jazz, having been one of the pioneers in introducing free jazz to Europe.
Hugely moving was the tribute paid by Iñaki Salvador and his five companions to Mikel Laboa on the tenth anniversary of the death of this greatly missed Basque singer-songwriter, an essential figure of contemporary Basque culture. The Victoria Eugenia Theatre was also the setting for two evocative fusions between the music of the West and the Middle East, thanks to Rabih Abou-Khalil and his oud (lute) and to Naïssam Jalal and his nay (Arabian flute).
The Green Stage was once again the venue of the most festive and popular concerts. Fiesta is precisely what was provided by Panama’s Rubén Blades, one of the musicians responsible for spreading the popularity of salsa music worldwide, on the beach, where South Americans, thrilled at having their idol so close to them, danced alongside Europeans. Too Many Zooz gave a demonstration of the most contemporary, impatient and provocative urban music. Izaro is the new star of Basque music and charms with her music. Gary Clark Jr. is a monster of the blues. Morgan is the most surprising Spanish group to appear in the last year. Mikel Erentxun is a forerunner of Spanish pop-rock. And Anna Calvi is impossible to classify because she shuns all classifications.
Every day the San Telmo Museum was the setting for a talk by Patri Goialde, professor of Jazz History at Musikene, who gave congenial and detailed explanations of the figures of Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus, each followed by a concert. The performances were provided by outstanding instrumentalists including Conrad Herwig, Carlos Martín, Chris Kase and Andrzej Olejniczak.
The Kursaal Terraces, the Nauticool and the Skoda Space in Alderdi-Eder more than met their objective: to give all sorts of concerts to all sorts of people, in the civic atmosphere that makes this Festival one of a kind. Particular mention must be made in Alderdi Eder of the appearance of the Trojan Sound System with Dennis Alcapone and Dawn Penn, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Trojan reggae label.
When it all comes down to it, a very fine Festival. And we already have the dates for next year: 24th-28th July 2019.

Salvador Sobral is in excellent form. He knows this is his moment and he’s making a great job of it. He’s a great communicator with the audience, makes a fine display of his vocal resources and moves comfortably between jazz, bossa nova and ballads, accompanied by the fabulous pianist, Júlio Resende. Thanks to these arms, he had already won over the Plaza de la Trinidad when he set about putting the cherry on the cake with a nod to Basque Culture playing Mikel Laboa’s Txoria txori on the piano.
Sobral voiced his astonishment at being able to perform after Benny Green, one of his favourite jazz musicians. Green, fronting his trio, gave an exquisite and varied concert, never straying far from the limits of classicism.
In the Kursaal Auditorium, Kenny Barron led his quintet, and what a quintet, in a recital which delighted the audience. Barron is the most elegant of the veteran pianists, and perhaps the most elegant since the disappearance of the always greatly-missed Hank Jones.
Cécile McLorin Salvant gave her second concert in the Victoria Eugenia, after her thrilling performance the evening before in the Plaza de la Trinidad. And this was another extraordinary concert, with a different repertoire, only repeating three songs, demonstrating that she has plenty to say, and all of it good.
Another person with plenty to say is the flute-player Naïsam Jalal, who organised around his nay (Arabian flute) a group uniting the musical souls of the Middle East and Europe.
Others who are also making a good job of it are Morgan, the surprise of the year among Spanish groups. Fans gathered in their thousands for their early evening concert on the Green Stage, and all left contented.
There’s no space for thousands at the San Telmo Museum; only for two hundred. Every day it fills with people eager to enjoy the interesting talks on the subject of jazz given by Patri Gioalde and the concerts following them. Yesterday the lead part was taken up by the Polish saxophonist Andrzej Olejniczak and his reinterpretation of Chopin.

Master Hussain. Master Holland. Master Potter. That’s how Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain and Chris Potter referred to one another. With respect, admiration and mutual understanding. And that’s what they are. They are masters in the execution of their instruments, and in the profound vision of jazz, and in composition. And in astonishing the audience.
Cécile McLorin Salvant still can’t be referred to as a master. Not yet. She’s too young. But she’s still there, she continues to unfurl that vocal register with that captivating timbre, she does do exciting things like that priceless version of Alfonsina y el mar she delighted us with, and she will be worshipped by the generations of the future.
Cécile McLorin Salvant herself recognised her debt to the great singers to have come before her, bringing Mary Stallings up onto the Plaza de la Trinidad stage to sing a blues duo. In the morning, Stallings had given a fantastic concert in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, with that stage elegance found in classic jazz singers. The Heineken Jazzaldia, which appreciates the quality of this vocalist, less well known than she deserves, this year presented her with the Donostiako Jazzaldia Award in recognition of the importance of her entire musical career.
Pianist Brad Mehldau obtained his Master in Artistic Excellence a long time ago. His capacity to continue evolving and to reach new heights of sensitivity and lyricism amazes even his unconditional followers, many in number seeing how the Kursaal was packed to overflowing.
Another master is Mikel Erentxun, if we can understand as such a person who shows the way and who, years down the line, is remembered by students with affection and admiration. That’s what’s happening to Erentxun, as increasingly more musicians recognise the influence of his uncomplicated pop-rock. Many of his songs from twenty or thirty years back are just as up to the minute as they were then. His concert on the Green Stage was a joy for his unconditional audience and, why not say it, for Erentxun and his solid band, who had an absolute ball to themselves.
There were other masters too, like Rabih Abou-Khalil, virtuoso of the oud, and Dennis Alcapone and Dawn Penn, heralds of the reggae music made popular, all those 50 years ago, by London’s Trojan label.
With so many masters and such a diligent audience, this was a fabulous third day of the 53 Heineken Jazzaldia.

Also enormously interesting are the new projects by Joshua Redman, Maria Schneider and Donny McCaslin, added to which Schneider and McCaslin will unite to perform a composition by Schneider in memory of David Bowie.
Diana Krall is sublime both as a pianist and as a singer. Her stage elegance, her repertoire invariably selected with such fine taste and her irrefutable accomplishment have made hers an essential jazz name in the last two decades. She also has a gift for choosing her collaborators. This time round, she’s coming with Joe Lovano as her guest artist, in other words, with one of the top saxophone players on the world jazz panorama, always brilliant at the front of his own groups and a luxurious companion when joining other figures, like in this case. Backed by Lovano, Diana Kralle is expected to give an extraordinary concert, supported by her regulars, Robert Hurst (double bass) and Karriem Riggins (drums).
Jamie Cullum needs no introduction in San Sebastian. He left his exquisite visiting card in 2015, when he rolled out an astonishing display of his versatility in three
performances: as a DJ, as a piano soloist and with his band. Cullum represents enthusiasm, contagious joy, boundless energy and vast amounts of music. He brings tears to the eyes when sitting at the piano to sing like the old crooners, and electrifies the audience when fronting his group. An early starter who still has a very long way to go.
Maria Schneider comes to the Heineken Jazzaldia for the first time to display her suggestive project with Ensemble Denada. Schneider is a prizewinning orchestra conductor and composer, winner of 5 Grammys, hailed by critics and audiences as one of the most decisive figures of today’s jazz. Only someone with her talent could lead a band like Norway’s Ensemble Denada, considered one of the most innovative in Europe. The group’s repertoire varies widely in both rhythm and melody, and its members have been carefully selected from among Norway’s best instrumentalists.
Donny McCaslin surprised a good part of the public with his fabulous performance at the Heineken Jazzaldia in 2017. Those who already knew him (he had been here in 2016 as part of the Steps Ahead Reunion Tour, and he participated in Blackstar, David Bowie’s last eternal album) were ready and waiting, but for those who discovered him at that time he was all of a revelation. McCaslin has notched up important experience in the jazz world thanks to his collaborations with Steps Ahead, Gil Evans, Danilo Pérez and Dave Douglas; he also landed a nomination for best jazz instrumental solo at the Grammys in 2004.
Donny McCaslin and Maria Schneider have formerly worked together and will coincide at the same Festival session. The first part will be brought to us by McCaslin as a quintet and the second will see Maria Schneider perform with Ensemble Denada on Sue (Or in a Season of Crime), the song she composed for Bowie in 2014, which earned her a Grammy and planted the seed of Blackstar. It is precisely Schneider who recommended Donny McCaslin to Bowie for recording Blackstar.
The singer Neneh Cherry has developed a sparkling and diverse career, becoming a great international figure thanks to songs like Woman and 7 Seconds or to her impressive version of Cole Porter’s classic, I've Got You Under My Skin. She has also promoted innovative projects including her collaboration with Scandinavia’s experimental jazz trio, The Thing, at the Heineken Jazzaldia in 2012, or CirKus, with which she performed in San Sebastian in 2007. Interest in the mise en scene of her most recent album, Broken Politics (2018) is causing great expectation.
Joshua Redman is one of the most charismatic sax players to have come out of the 90s. He is coming to present Still Dreaming, which we are fully justified in saying has been one of the most impeccable jazz albums of those released in 2018. With him he will bring an exceptional line-up: Ron Miles on the trumpet, Scott Colley on the double bass, and Dave King on drums.
As previously announced, John Zorn will return to the Heineken Jazzaldia following the resounding success of his Masada Marathon in 2013. This time round, he’ll do it as the frontman of the Bagatelles Marathon, split into two afternoon sessions at the Kursaal Auditorium; one on July 27th and the other on July 28th.
The musical marathon will involve 14 different ensembles who will perform more than 50 compositions from The Bagatelles, John Zorn’s expansive new book of music.
Among the more than thirty participating musicians are Mary Halvorson, Marc Ribot, Kris Davis, Julian Lage, Dave Douglas, Joey Baron, Craig Taborn, Peter Evans, John Medeski, Ikue Mori, Erik Friedlander, Mark Feldman, Sylvie Courvoisier, Kenny Wollesen, Trevor Dunn and many more who understand Zorn’s creative universe like nobody else.
We will shortly announce more artists who will complete the programme of the 54th Heineken Jazzaldia. Tickets will go on sale in mid-February.
