To celebrate it, the San Sebastián Jazz Festival will hold 5 concerts at Chillida Leku. A splendid opportunity to discover Chillida’s work and take a stroll around this marvellous museum while enjoying live concerts. Three of the concerts will take place in the evenings of 21, 26 and 28 July, at 19:30, given respectively by Iñaki Salvador, Federica Michisanti and the MAC Saxophone Quartet fronted by Rosario Giuliani. The other two concerts are part of the Txikijazz programme and will take place at 12:30 on 25 and 27 July with performances by Noa & The Helldrinkers and Carole Alston. Those coming by private car can use the car park in place for the event at Galarreta, taking the free shuttle bus from there to the museum. Rundown of the programme:

21 July

Iñaki Salvador: Txoria nuen maite (19:30 – €15) San Sebastián’s Iñaki Salvador has been a leading light in recent decades of Basque music and is unquestionably one of the greatest international representatives of our Jazz. The pianist and composer will bring a new take, set around improvisation and Jazz, on the music of Mikel Laboa, the figure par excellence of Basque song, with whom Salvador worked for 25 years.

25 July

Noa & The HellDrinkers (12:30 – €14/€7/€0) Local group Noa & The HellDrinkers won first prize in the prestigious European Blues Challenge in 2023. A fantastic voice, that of Noa Eguiguren, accompanied by a fabulous band, bringing live performances packed with feeling and energy combined with a passion for blues, rhythm & blues, rock, funk… Workshop: The Music Gate (Maushaus)

Federica Michisanti Quartet (19:30 – €15) The great Italian double bass player and composer and the exceptional French clarinettist Louis Sclavis, in the company of two extraordinary musicians: French cellist Vincent Courtois and Italy’s Michele Rabbia on the drums. Together they will play Michisanti’s compositions, with their sound drawing on European classical music and avant-garde Jazz, leaving space for spontaneous improvisation and interludes by the drums.

27 July

Carole Alston (12:30 – €14/€7/€0) The singer hailing from Washington DC has developed her extensive professional career alternating her activity in the field of Jazz, performing in myriad festivals and clubs all over the world, with theatre where, apart from her extraordinary vocal skills, she has also displayed her talent as an actress. An artiste who adds her vast knowledge of Jazz language to her talent for gospel and blues, which, combined with her powerful stage presence and enormous experience, make Alston one of most interesting contemporary voices. Workshop: The Music Gate (Maushaus)

28 July

8 free concerts: Izaro + Larkin Poe + Merina Gris + Shinova + Les Amazones d’Afrique + El Columpio Asesino + North Mississippi Allstars + Chill Mafia

The poster for the 59th Jazzaldia has been created by Detritus

The Keler Gunea stage, on the marvellous Zurriola beach, will once again host the Jazzaldia’s most popular and diversified space. From 24-27 July the bill features eight free concerts, boasting five fronted by women, including Basque, North American and African bands playing myriad styles ranging from southern rock to pop, and bookending urban, techno, roots, blues and indie sounds on the way. Fresh from winning the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album, the Lovell sisters with their group Larkin Poe will take to the Keler Gunea stage on the Zurriola Beach on 24 July. Their album Blood Harmony is a spectacular compendium of the characteristic Southern United States music: blues, gospel, bluegrass and, simply, southern rock. Larkin Poe is known for the extraordinary intensity of their live performances, their energy, excellent voices and musical prowess. Opening the bill before their show is one of our city’s most cherished artists, Izaro. This will be a unique opportunity to enjoy Cerodenero, the latest album from a well-established yet strongly evolving artist, an excellent singer with a world all of her own who has always boasted extraordinary sensitivity and an individual personality. On the same day, 24 July, on the Kursaal terraces, there will be another four concerts, all different and exciting thanks to their diversity: the Japanese keyboard player BIGYUKI's band with Tomoaki Baba on the sax; the Polish pianist Marcin Masecki; the American sax-player Lakecia Benjamin; the great trumpeter Eddie Henderson in a quintet alongside the trombone player Steve Davis and, finally, the Mexican artist now living in Aquitaine, Carolina Katum. On Thursday 25 July, the Keler Gunea stage will host two Basque groups (this is an edition with an outstanding array of local musicians). On the one hand is Merina Gris, a modern and exciting proposal from Gipuzkoa; and, on the other, from Bizkaia, Shinova, an indie group currently on the up in the Spanish scene. Coming from Benin, Mali and Congo are the singers of Les Amazones D’Afrique, spectacular with their refreshing approach to African pop, who will take to the stage on 26 July. On the same day, as part of their farewell tour, El Columpio Asesino will say goodbye to their fans on the Zurriola beach. A day of emotions with an audience certain to flock to this farewell gig with devotion and warmth. To end the Keler Gunea concerts we will return to the style of the first day with another benchmark of the blues and southern rock, the North Mississippi Allstars, a band with an extensive, balanced and varied career to their name. And lastly, closing the stage this year, will be one of the most irreverent and transgressive bands, Pamplona’s Chill Mafia. KELER, our main sponsor, gives its name to the KELER GUNEA stage, which can be found like other years alongside the breakwater on the Zurriola Beach.   Detritus is the author of the poster: This artist, poster designer and illustrator from San Sebastián completed the first year of his Fine Arts studies, 1982-83, in Leioa, before turning his paintbrush to the design of posters reflecting his earlier experience with comics. Today Detritus continues to nurture and enhance his signature style of combining text and image in his work. In the 80s he embraced the alternative Basque Country trend, creating numerous posters with myriad themes: the punk ethos, the squatter, feminist, anti-war, environmental movements… He later engaged with other artistic collectives in Bilbao, such as the Safi Gallery and Las Chamas. Parallel to his personal artistic activity, Detritus has worked in theatre design and on the decoration of sets for numerous film shoots. 59 Jazzaldia Kartela The poster for the 59th Jazzaldia takes its inspiration from the artist’s memories of the event in the late 70s and early 80s, years when the San Sebastián festival would transform the city’s monotonous appearance with its cutting-edge posters, bands playing in the street and the Carmelo Balda pelota court turned into an enormous dormitory for visitors. These were times when the frenzy unleashed by the music interrupted everyday obligations and saw the artist throw his regular lifestyle to the wind. For all of these reasons, the author of the poster says that “he is delighted to adapt his poster-making style, construed in alternative movements, to the spirit of the Jazzaldia ”. Detritus has not only created a poster announcing the Jazzaldia, it also brings the music to life. Thus, as he explains, the singer, on a stage in bluish hues, sings the red and pink lettering; the acid green rectangles represent the high notes of the sax; and the sax player is both the ear and its earring while, with his yellow sound, he lends shape to the jaw of the singer and projects his voice.   [post_title] => THE 59th SAN SEBASTIAN JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS ITS POSTER AND THE KELER GUNEA PROGRAMME [post_excerpt] => 8 free concerts: Izaro + Larkin Poe + Merina Gris + Shinova + Les Amazones d’Afrique + El Columpio Asesino + North Mississippi Allstars + Chill Mafia [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => donostiako-59-jazzaldiak-keler-guneko-programazioa-eta-bere-kartela-aurkezten-ditu [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2024-03-21 09:33:15 [post_modified_gmt] => 2024-03-21 08:33:15 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => https://jazzaldia.eus/sin-categoria-en/donostiako-59-jazzaldiak-keler-guneko-programazioa-eta-bere-kartela-aurkezten-ditu-2/ [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [2] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 35374 [post_author] => 2 [post_date] => 2024-01-11 11:00:09 [post_date_gmt] => 2024-01-11 10:00:09 [post_content] => Foto Web Jazzaldia 900x500 Motelas 2023 2 c Patxi BU The process to select the ten local groups who will play at the 59th San Sebastian Jazz Festival, from 23-28 July 2024, will kick off with the first of the 15 performances before an audience from which the final list will be drawn up. The Festival, to run from 23 to 28 July 2024, launches the sale of individual and season tickets for the Trinitate Plaza, Kursaal Auditorioa, San Telmo Museoa and Victoria Eugenia Antzokia

This year’s programme features extraordinary singers: Canadians Rufus Wainwright and Diana Krall, the former making his first-time appearance at the Jazzaldia and the latter, the unquestionable doyenne of female Jazz voices; the Brazilian Marisa Monte, marvellous and unique, a brilliant composer and performer of tremendous charm; the Catalan Sílvia Pérez Cruz, in unbeatable creative form, who brings her latest project; the great Gregory Porter, the most fabulous and iconic of all male Jazz singers; the Korean Youn Sun Nah, delicate and elegant, a performer of delightful allure and spectacular voice. Particularly interesting are the two seasons dedicated to two extraordinary creators in the field of contemporary Jazz. In the first of the two, sax-player John Zorn will take the lead in three shows – two in the Kursaal Auditorium and a third in the Plaza de la Trinidad. A total of six different line-ups will perform at these three events, with proposals uniting fantastic instrumentalists including Julian Lage, Brian Marsella, Ches Smith, Jorge Roeder, John Medeski, and many others. Providing the cherry on the cake this season, the immense sax-player and composer Zorn himself will perform in the Plaza de la Trinidad with his New Masada Quartet. The second season dedicated to another great contemporary creator is the one featuring the bass player William Parker, a musician rarely seen in Europe who will give three concerts, with his trio, his duo and his quartet, on three separate stages. Season tickets have been put together for those wishing to attend all concerts in either of these two seasons. The list of names announced today includes many other leading lights in the Jazz scene: today’s most creative Jazz pianist, Brad Mehldau, co-fronting a top-notch quartet with Chris Potter on the sax, John Patitucci on the bass and Johnathan Blake on the drums; a pair of legends in our music, formed by John Scofield and Dave Holland; three incredible pianists from the new generation of stars, Marco Mezquida, hailing from the Balearics, Marta Sánchez from Madrid, and Júlio Resende from Portugal. As a new feature, held of course yet again in the San Telmo Museum, are the strictly unplugged (unamplified) performances by great pianists, but this time coming with the option to enjoy offers in duo format. For the fourth year in a row, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre will host the tenth edition of JazzEñe, organised by the SGAE Foundation. This year will see four double bills featuring the best of Spanish Jazz. The programme with the eight selected proposals will be announced in spring 2024. Individual and season tickets for the above concerts are now on sale. Tickets can be purchased in person from the ticket offices, and online from the Jazzaldia and Donostia Kultura websites. Programme of free concerts: While tickets are now on sale for concerts in the four paying venues, a large part of the Jazzaldia programme is yet to be announced. Many of these concerts, equally or more important than those announced today, are free of charge and will inundate our city on stages such as the Kursaal Terraces, Keler Gunea and Nauticool. The audience flocked en masse to all of the concerts at the San Sebastian Jazz Festival, breaking all-time records for attendance, with 191,000 people having packed out the 90 concerts running on 16 stages over 5 days. Tickets flew off the shelves for 15 of the 21 paying concerts. The ‘sold out’ sign was posted for 3 of the 4 nights at the Trini, for 3 of the 5 concerts at the Kursaal, for all those in the San Telmo Museum, for the two in the Sala Club, for one of those in the JazzEñe initiative and for the one taking place in the María Cristina Hotel. A total of 18,882 tickets were purchased from 40 countries around the world. For their part, the free concerts congregated 172,000 people.

We were treated to concerts by big international stars, to rising talents set to mark the future of Jazz, to different music styles, to local groups… Concerts of excellent musical quality, many of which will forever stay on our minds such as those given, to name but a few, by: Julian Lage, Norah Jones, Ben Harper, Ezra Collective, Yosuke Yamashita…

The Festival thanks and hugely appreciates the response of the public who, despite the rain on 24 and 25 July, not only packed out the venues but, yet another year, did so with exemplary behaviour and zero incidents. Once again the city was inundated with music in a festive and celebratory atmosphere.

Trinitate Plaza

The first day in the Trinitate Plaza, on 22 July, brought a night of guitars. First up was Julian Lage, who gave a magnificent concert, demonstrating his position as one of the guitarists on greatest form and with most future in the Jazz world. Afterwards Bill Frisell once again delighted the audience with the sharpness, elegance and warmth of his guitar. Between their performances, the two guitarists took to the stage together for one of those moments that will be forever forged in the memory of the audience.

The 23rd was general election day, but that didn’t stop the Trini from filling again. To start with, Abdullah Ibrahim received the Donostiako Jazzaldia Award followed by a delicate and sublime concert ending with the South African maestro singing from the bottom of his heart, a cappella. The second concert was that of Nubya Garcia, whose enormous presence and punch revealed her to be one of brightest stars of contemporary Jazz.

The 24th started with Enrico Rava who, in the morning, had received the Donostiako Jazzaldia life achievement award for his musical career. Italy’s maestro on the trumpet didn’t disappoint and delivered a magnificent concert surrounded by young Jazz talents from his country. Later came the performance of David Helbock’s Austrian Syndicate which, despite the heavy rain, succeeded in keeping most of the audience in their seats, enjoying his extraordinary live show.

The concerts in the Trini ended in party mode. First of all the group from Mali, Bamba Wassoulou Groove, had the whole square up and dancing to their hypnotic guitars. And putting the final touch to the edition, we were able to enjoy the concert given by a fantastic Joss Stone who, with her impressive voice and friendly approach, had the audience in her pocket right from the beginning, coming down off the stage several times to sing among the fans and who also had everyone up and dancing in the Trini.

Kursaal Auditorioa

Offering a wide variety of styles, the Kursaal Auditorioa hosted 5 concerts of fantastic artistic quality. Kenny Barron took to the stage with the EGO Basque Youth Orchestra on the first day, delighting the audience. On the 22nd, Norah Jones was magnificent with her unique voice and marvellous piano. Ben Harper, with The Innocent Criminals, charmed fans with his extraordinary voice and brilliant guitar. On the 24th it was the turn of Pat Metheny who once again entranced his faithful followers with his guitars. And to end, on the 25th, Rocío Márquez & BRONQUIO delivered a striking concert: complex, full of nuances, sound textures, surprises and twists, of poetry, art and feeling.

FCC Victoria Eugenia Antzokia

This year, like last, the FFCC Victoria Eugenia Antzokia provided the venue for the 9th edition of JazzEñe. All of these concerts were attended by an average of 650 people who were able to enjoy 8 musical proposals of excellent quality: Lucía Rey Trio, MOVE, Carles Margarit Quinteto, NGBM Cuarteto, Alto For Two, Niño Josele, Bandolero Cuarteto and Gonzalo del Val.

Keler Gunea

The setting for 8 concerts played in varied styles to huge audiences.

On the 21st, Village People had the 40,000 people on the beach up and dancing; later, it was the turn of the great Fred Wesley, one of the big names in the history of funk. On 22 July, Blue Lab Beats, fresh and experimental, displayed a warm approach that soon won over the audience, after which the thousands of fans who flocked to the Keler Gunea to see Viva Suecia sung and danced to their numbers from the first note to the last. On the 23rd, Arde Bogotá were bursting with energy, enthusiasm and vibrancy, followed by Tiken Jah Fakoly who, with his militant reggae and his excellent band, created a spectacular atmosphere among the 16,000 fans who came along to see them. On 24 July the first concert was given by the Ezra Collective, a group on top form and undoubtedly one of the finest in today’s Jazz world, who soon got the 5,000 people who stuck with them despite the downpour up on their feet to have fun. ZETAK was tasked with giving the last concert of the year on the Keler Gunea stage, a performance played to an audience of 8,000 fans who sang along with all his songs.

Skoda San Telmo Museoa

This year we repeated the solo piano concert format in the San Telmo Museum cloister. Concerts which, completely unplugged, offer the possibility to enjoy the piano as part of a small audience and in the magical setting of the museum cloister. Four Japanese pianists gave five concerts, all sold out: Yosuke Yamashita, recipient of the Donostiako Jazzaldia Award, performed on the 21st and 22nd with two different programmes outstanding for their quality, expressiveness and technique; on the 23rd, Eri Yamamoto, bursting with charm and elegance, was joined by her husband Bruce Barth on a number of piano 4-hands; on the 24th, Kento Tsubosaka, with his creativity and superb technique; and on the 25th, Hakuei Kim brought the solo piano season to a close with his personal, elegant and rhythm-packed style.

Frigo Gunea y Fnac Gunea

These jam-packed terraces hosted groups of several styles and origins. A wide representation of Basque groups, result of the festival’s Local Group Selection and Katapulta Tour initiative, highlighted the great moment currently being enjoyed by Basque Jazz: Xahu, Isla Trio, Motelas, Arnaud Labastie Trio, Les Cuisinieres, Lutfi Jakfar’s Sith Trio, Bamms, Amaika Rude, Mikel Legasa’s Quintet, Xavi Maldonado & David Cid Quartet, Kinfolk and Olana Liss.

There were also well-known international artists boasting brilliant careers: Damir Imamović, The Side Effects, Ill Considered, Jerry Bergonzi, The Mississippians, Sara Dowling, Pacific Jazz Ambassadors, Conversessions and Bengue.

Nauticool, Garbera, Fnac Foruma y San Martin Merkatua

Our chillout space par excellence, Nauticool, provided the venue for 5 concerts offering the audience the opportunity to enjoy music in a marvellous setting: Arima Soul, Elena Setién, Blue Lab Beats, Nakar and Ramada Inn.

There were five concerts in Garbera: Sara Dowling, Ill Considered, Jerry Bergonzi Quartet, Blue Lab Beats and Five Stars. Fnac Foruma, for its part, delivered the concerts by Ura Dúo, Trío Nordeste and the Brian Aching Quartet.

The San Martin Merkatua also saw two concerts: Gonzalo Encinal & Fran Serrano and Rodrigo Lauroba & Aitor Miramon.

Txikijazz

The 5 days of this year’s Txikijazz were simply marvellous. Families and the audience, Txikijazz regulars for the last 11 years, were able to enjoy a wide variety of concerts. They were treated to great Jazz by Five Stars, to Eri Yamamoto’s piano, to the fun of Amaika Rude and Les Cuisinieres, to the magic tricks of young Iago, and to the voices of Michelle Hendricks and Sara Dowling. All in 3 spaces that gain in strength every edition: Chillida Leku, Garbera and the Kutxa Fundazioa space in Tabakalera. The latter two were packed to the hilt, while in Chillida Leku there were more than 1500 people. The workshops were a huge success, full of boys and girls eager to create while listening to a Jazz concert. At the end of the day the aim is to make our mark with the new generations. Tick!

Streaming & Social Media

This year 8 concerts were streamed free of charge; all will remain available on our YouTube channel. We have a total of 42,000 followers on our social media.
